-- QUESTION & ANSWER --

I was reading about the DOS wedge,
and was wondering, instead of loading
the program every time you turn on
your computer, could you program your
computer to have the wedge ready for
use every time you turn it on?
>No. There is a very good reason that
>you can't 'program your computer' to
>do this. The DOS WEDGE is stored in
>what is called RAM (short for Random
>Access Memory). When you turn your
>computer off, all of the contents of
>RAM is erased. In other words, there
>goes the WEDGE!! Another type of
>memory is ROM (short for Read Only
>Memory). As the name implies, you
>can only read (PEEK) these locations.
>Because of this, it is impossible to
>store the DOS WEDGE (or any other
>program) in ROM. Therefore it is
>impossible to 'program your computer'
>to have the WEDGE in place whenever
>you 'power up'.

How much can I expand the ram memory
on C-64 and VIC-20? I have heard that
the VIC-20 can only use 32K and never
heard what the maximum K is for the
C-64.
>There are currently memory boards out
>in the market which can expand your
>VIC or C-64 by 256K. This memory is
>in ADDITION to memory already in the
>computer.
> EX. C-64 + board = 64 + 256 = 320K
> VIC + board = 20 + 256 = 276K
>The limits of expansion are theoreti-
>cally limitless, but who needs more
>than 320K for a home computer?
